Dux was brought in together with 3 other red-fronted parakeets by people who had a nest by accident. The people told us that they did not have enough space to care for the 4 extra birds, because they were getting too big and needed too much space. Fortunately, we were able to give them the room, care and attention they needed and now they can enjoy a spacious aviary.

Where does it feel at home?

The red-headed cockatiel can survive in various environments. Rainforests as well as forests, scrubland and open areas are part of its habitat.

It is only found in New Zealand.

What do they like to eat?

They like to eat flowers, fruit, seeds, leaves and buds from a variety of plants. Occasionally they supplement their diet with, for example, a mealworm.

Fun fact

When these birds fly up or land they make a 'ki-ki-ki-ki' or 'kek-kik-kek' sound.
