Fennec Foxes: Why They Don’t Belong as Pets

A Sad Beginning for Our Fennec Foxes

Tsiga, Zuri, Vinjara, Shujamaa, Zwadi, and Wepezi were all confiscated from an animal trader who had obtained them illegally and kept them in deplorable conditions. When the police raided the site, they found the foxes in cramped cages, deprived of proper care and space to express their natural behaviors.

Today, only Zwadi, Tsiga, and Zuri remain with us, but they are now surrounded by loving care and the freedom they deserve.

Why Fennec Foxes Shouldn’t Be Kept as Pets

Fennec foxes are undeniably charming with their adorable appearance and lively behavior. However, many people don’t realize these animals require specialized care and living conditions that cannot be replicated in a household setting.

Fennec foxes are wild animals and belong in their natural habitat, where they can forage, dig, and explore. When kept as pets, they often suffer from stress and health problems due to a lack of space and an unsuitable environment.

Additionally, their diet must be carefully balanced with specific nutrients that are difficult to provide in a home setting. This is one reason why keeping fennec foxes as pets is illegal in Belgium. These are not domesticated animals, and without the ability to exhibit their natural behaviors, they cannot remain healthy or happy in captivity.

The Unique Needs of Fennec Foxes

In the wild, fennec foxes thrive in rocky or desert regions, relying on their extraordinary adaptability to survive in extreme conditions. They need spaces to hide, dig, and climb, all of which are crucial to their well-being.

Caring for fennec foxes requires extensive knowledge of their specific behavioral and physical needs, making them vulnerable in the hands of people without the appropriate expertise and facilities.

At De Zonnegloed, our fennec foxes enjoy not only the space to roam and forage freely but also a tailored diet and enrichment activities that allow them to exhibit natural behaviors and maintain their health.
