Curly
Curly was bought together with several other tarantulas by a student. When the care for the animals turned out to be harder than expected and the animals were less 'cool' than he hoped, he wanted to get rid of them. His reasoning: "If they are not taken in by a shelter, I will flush them down the toilet". Upon arrival several of them were already dead.
Carla
Carla was seized by the Animal Welfare Department from a private owner. A seizure only happens in case of serious animal abuse (neglect, too small enclosure, illegal keeping of an animal, no official papers, ...).
Where does he feel most at home?
The curlyhair tarantula lives in the tropical rainforests of Central America. Preferably close to tall trees and near water.
What's his favourite food?
They like insects and small birds. They will look for prey during the night, as they’re nocturnal animals. When they catch a prey, they’ll inject a poison into the animal, a protein-dissolving enzyme, that not only paralyzes their prey, but causes the prey to become fluid on the inside. This way the tarantula can suck it empty.
Fun fact
At the end of each leg, the curlyhair tarantula has its senses. They can smell, taste and feel vibrations. With this, the tarantula can find its prey.
