Bactrian camel Camelus bactrianus
Animals in our sanctuary
Joep (Male)
Joep was brought in by the Overloon animal park from the Netherlands. The animal was brought there as a stallion. What they didn't know, was that Joep was brought up by hand because his mother had rejected him. A camel raised like that can certainly not serve as a breeding stallion that is immediately rejected from the group. Joep had a hard time with the wild females.
Nelis (Male)
Nelis was brought in by Overloon animal park from the Netherlands. The animal was expelled from the group.
Juliette (female)
Camel Juliette, along with several meerkats and a group of American red squirrels, was seized by Animal Welfare Flanders. Juliette was in bad shape, showing signs of neglect and was clearly malnourished and dehydrated.
Where does he feel most at home?
The Bactrian camel loves dry desert areas in central Asia.
That's his favourite food?
The camel is a herbivore. He eats grass, leaves and grasses from bushes.
Fun fact
The humps of the camel have various functions. The fat serves as an energy reserve in case of shortage. In the mating season he defends his territory fiercely against other males; he smears his back hump by use of its tail with urine and his front hump with perfumes from the glands from his neck. Threatening for males, attractive for females.
