Hermann's tortoise Testudo hermanni
Animals in our sanctuary
Helena
Helena, Zefiros and Thanos were taken care of on 14/01/2012.
They were found in a forest by a VOC. Probably an owner who no longer wanted to care for the animals and left them in the forest. The VOC brought the animals to De Zonnegloed where they now live together with the Tamarins and the green iguanas.
Fietje
A lady in possession of a tortoise that her deceased husband had received more than forty years ago from a co-worker at work. The origin of the turtle is unknown.
Given the lady's advanced age, she has decided to transfer the turtle to vzw De Zonnegloed.
Squirtle
Squirtle was confiscated when it became clear that the owner had no official CITES papers for the animal. This makes her history and age unknown. The only thing we know for sure is that she was obtained in an illegal way.
Rosy
Rosy is one of the many turtles that are kept by private individuals, but who cannot take care of the animals. The animals are brought in by a private person at a rescue centre or are collected after they have been dumped and found by other people.

Luciana comes from a man who was told that he is incurably ill. Because this species requires a lot of special care and attention, he went looking for a suitable shelter. Luckily, there was still place for her here.
