Serval Leptailurus serval
Animals in our sanctuary
Leone
Ghana
Ghana comes from a zoo in France. She sat there with Leone and was brought to De Zonnegloed in consultation with Stichting AAP. In this way they have a hopeful life back together.
Where does he feel most at home?
The serval lives in savannas and open grasslands near water. It occurs in Central and South Africa.
What's his favourite food?
His diet consists of small mammals, birds and frogs. With its long, mobile front legs, the serval can get rodents out of their caves. When he hears one walking underneath the ground, he knows exactly where to 'angling'. He is also a good swimmer. He wades quietly through the water on the hunt for frogs and fish.
Fun fact
When the serval hears or sees a bird flying low through the air, it will jump up. This jump is called a 'mouse jump'. He can jump 2 meters high and 4 meters far.
